Education
Newfoundland and Labrador's primary, elementary and secondary education is free to all individuals and is structured within a Kindergarten to Grade 12 system. In Canada, it is required that every child between the ages of 6 - 16 attend school. Education is provided in English in all areas of the province and is also available in French in some areas.

Individuals wishing to attend college or university must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Education at this level can be costly. However, Newfoundland and Labrador boasts one of the lowest tuition fees in Canada. Permanent residents who require financial assistance can apply for a Canada Student Loan.

Newfoundland and Labrador's post-secondary educational system consists of two sectors:

  • The university sector, (Memorial University)
  • The college sector, consisting of one public college (The College of the North Atlantic) and numerous private colleges.

Newcomers to Newfoundland and Labrador come from diverse educational backgrounds. For this reason, academic assessment services are available throughout Canada to provide standardized evaluation of foreign credentials. This information assists individuals in making informed decisions regarding applications for employment, education and professional memberships.
